How Do I Take Care Of My Storm Drain?

You may need some tools

Trash bags, a broom, rake, shovel, trash grabber, gloves, orange safety cones, and vests may be useful tools depending on the traffic and drain location. You can request some gloves and trash bags here.

Clean on and around your drain!

Prevent potential pollutants from entering the storm drain by cleaning what is on the drain AND around the drain. Be sure to be especially vigilant before and after rain events!

Be Safe! Materials on or around the drain

Sharp things could be present or unknown materials. Wear gloves and protect your hands! Never remove any unknown chemicals and if you see a stranger improperly disposing of materials in your storm drain- do not confront the stranger!

Call 901-636-4349 or email [email protected]. Take pictures only if you can do so safely!

Be Safe! Traffic around the Drain

Consider using orange safety cones and never stand or sit in a busy street. If your drain is on a busy street, just keep the sidewalk clear. Try to clean your drain during the day in a safety vest or bright clothes!

Make sure you never…

Remove the grate. Clean only the surface around the drain or on the top! Also never remove or touch any unknown chemicals if you find them placed on or around your drain. Never try to repair a broken drain. For all these things, email [email protected] for help!

Recycle!

Sort the waste you remove and dispose of it properly! If it can be recycled- you can recycle it! Yard waste can be composted if you choose. And trash can be properly bagged and disposed.

Prevent Storm Water Pollution

When storm water runoff carries these pollutants into a storm drain - it becomes storm water pollution!

Litter

Memphis don’t litter! It can go to the river! And clog the storm water drainage system. Properly dispose of litter!

Yard waste

Grass, leaves, and soil are all natural things. But too much of any of these will harm our rivers and streams.

Pet Waste

You can’t see the invisible bacteria carried by storm water runoff from pet waste. Pick it up and leave no trace!

Grease, paint, and oil

Pay attention to oil leaks and properly dispose of paint and grease! That stuff is deleterious to rivers and streams!
